Housing

Students have access to rental apartments specifically designed for them, which are generally more affordable than other rental options. These apartments are offered by student housing foundations, university student unions, dormitories, and other foundations. Some educational institutions also have their own dormitories. Your place of study can provide additional information on where to apply for student housing.

It’s advisable to apply for housing as soon as you receive your admission offer. However, in larger cities, it can take several weeks or even months to secure an apartment.

Once you obtain a student apartment, you can usually reside there for the duration of your studies. However, this requires you to be a full-time student and to make satisfactory progress in your studies. The landlord has the right to terminate the lease if your studies do not progress sufficiently.

Electricity, Insurance, and Internet – Important Information for Students

Student Electricity

When you move into a new student apartment, choosing an electricity provider is one of the first tasks. Many electricity companies offer special student electricity contracts that are often more affordable and flexible, fitting a student’s budget. Remember to set up your electricity contract in advance so that your home is ready and lit when you move in.

Home insurance

As a student, it’s important to ensure the safety of your belongings. Home insurance protects your personal items from theft, fire, and water damage. Affordable insurance options are available for students, covering the specific risks you may encounter. Be sure to check the terms of the insurance policy and ensure they meet your needs.

Internet

A reliable and fast internet connection is almost essential for studying. Several operators offer internet services aimed at students, which are competitively priced and easily accessible. It’s also a good idea to check if the internet connection is included in your student apartment’s rent or if you need to obtain it separately.

Applying for Housing Benefit

Students can receive general housing allowance if they live in rental accommodations and are responsible for their own housing costs. The amount of housing allowance depends on several factors, such as:

– Housing Costs: Rent and maintenance fees fall under acceptable housing expenses, which have defined maximum limits.
– Income Limits: The household income affects the amount of support. All household members’ incomes are included.
– Type of Housing: Housing allowance can be granted for rental, right-of-occupancy, or shared ownership apartments. No support will be provided for owned homes starting January 1, 2025.
– Household Size: Support is granted collectively to all residents of the same apartment.

Housing allowance helps students cover housing costs, so check your eligibility to apply for support. For more information, click here.
